SUNNYVALE — One person was killed in a multi-car collision on Highway 101 near Mathilda Avenue early Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was first reported at 1:27 a.m. in the southbound lanes past Mathilda, the CHP said. Based on initial reports, at least two vehicles, and as many as three, were involved.

CHP investigators also received a report that a gray Mazda CX-5 hit a pedestrian, but it was not immediately clear whether that person was thrown from a vehicle in the initial crash then was hit, or had exited a vehicle and then was hit.

Additional details were not immediately available. The entire southbound segment of Highway 101 near the crash site was closed to traffic for about an hour to allow the CHP to investigate the scene.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
