OAKLAND — Two men were killed in Oakland traffic collisions Sunday night and Monday morning, and a person was detained in one of the deaths, authorities said.

The fatality that resulted in a detention happened around 10:50 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of 73rd Avenue and Orral Street in East Oakland.

Police said the man killed was riding a scooter southbound in the 1700 block of 73rd Avenue in the northbound traffic lanes. The man then made a right turn toward Orral Street and was crossing the southbound lanes when he was struck by a 2006 Mercedes Benz that was traveling southbound on 73rd Avenue, police said.

The man was ejected onto the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Oakland woman driving the car remained at the scene and was detained for questioning because she appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, authorities said. She was taken to a hospital for complaint of pain and had not been formally arrested as of Monday afternoon.

The other fatal crash happened around 2:40 a.m. Monday in the 300 block of Grand Avenue, a few blocks from Lake Merritt.

Police said a man was driving a Cadillac SRX SUV eastbound on Grand Avenue when he left the roadway and crashed into a tree on the south curb. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The coroner’s office identified the man killed as Emanuel Gamino-Chavarria, 26, of Dublin.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors.

Anyone with information about either crash is asked to call police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
