A Prince George’s County police officer has been suspended with pay after being arrested and charged with second-degree assault in Charles County early Tuesday.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, police Officer Charles Williams Jr. called the sheriff’s office to his home in Waldorf “in reference to a situation.” Prince George’s police said in a news release that the 1 a.m. call was for a domestic dispute.

When deputies encountered Williams’s home, he appeared intoxicated, according to the sheriff’s office. Williams ignored deputies’ commands and struck a deputy in the arm, the sheriff’s office said. He was then taken into custody.

Williams joined the department in 2015 and is assigned to the patrol bureau, the department said.

Efforts to reach Williams on Tuesday were unsuccessful.

“We believe everyone is innocent until proven guilty,” said Angelo Consoli, president of the union that represents Prince George’s County police. “We trust in the court system.”
