SAN JOSE — An investigation was under way Saturday into the death of a city contractor who was discovered Friday morning at the San Jose Animal Care Center, officials said.

It was not immediately clear how the person died. No pets were involved in the incident, the City of San Jose Animal Care & Services said in a social media post.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the city contractor who passed away,” the agency said. “The City of San Jose team is devastated by this news and is focusing on supporting staff who worked with their colleague.”

The deceased was a man in his 60s, according to Kellie Benz, spokesperson for the agency. The department is waiting for answers from the coroner’s office, she said, and it does not currently have reason to worry about health or safety problems with the facility or its procedures.

The center at 2750 Monterey Road was closed following the death, but reopened for normal activities Saturday.

“Saturdays are typically busy for us and today was a typical Saturday,” Benz said.

The agency said it is working closely with the San Jose police and fire departments, as well as the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

A spokesperson for the police department confirmed it is investigating an unattended death but referred additional questions to the San Jose City Manager’s Office, which did not immediately return a message seeking details about the incident.
