ChatGPT Is Getting a Mac App 9

OpenAI has launched an official macOS app for ChatGPT, with a Windows version coming "later this year." "Both free and paid users will be able to access the new app, but it will only be available to ChatGPT Plus users starting today before a broader rollout in 'the coming weeks,'" reports The Verge. From the report: In the demo shown by OpenAI, users could open the ChatGPT desktop app in a small window, alongside another program. They asked ChatGPT questions about what's on their screen -- whether by typing or saying it. ChatGPT could then respond based on what it "sees." OpenAI says users can ask ChatGPT a question by using the Option + Space keyboard shortcut, as well as take and discuss screenshots within the app. Further reading: OpenAI Launches New Free Model GPT-4o

I can now not only share my web searches, and chat logs, but I can also share my entire desktop and computer data with a cloud provider...

Make no mistake, the model is "free" as in it is paid with your privacy. It won't be easy to find an open source alternative easily, so people will undoubtablely use it. (Contrast to "chat" models, where Meta's LLama-3 is not able to match or beat older OpenAI GPT versions).

Just as a suggestion, if you really want to try this, please do it in a virtual machine (mac has an internal support for vms, but not easy to set up). Do not install a keylogger / screen recorder willingly on your full system.

Non sequitur. There's no need to appeal to Apple to create an app to spy on you. You don't need Apple's permission to do so. You can even do it without any warnings by spending $99 buying a signing certificate. Apple has no say in what app you write, or what it does, or anything.

I don't get what's so useful about it - isn't that just a web browser in the end fixed to one URL?

      • Well apple sure has a lot to say if your app will be allowed on the app store. I thnk there have been stories about that on the tech sites recently.

First mover advantage on Mac, whereas on Windows you're competing with MS shoving Copilot down everyone's throat.

  • Np need for it !
