Officials are investigating after, they say, a “projectile” was used to kill two swans near Nabnasset Lake in Westford.

Westford police were alerted Tuesday that two dead swans were found in the woods between Lakeside Terrace and Newport Drive on Nabnasset Lake, the department said in a statement Thursday.

Swans are protected under state law and there is no official hunting season for them.

The Westford Police Department, Massachusetts Environmental Police, and Westford Animal Control are investigating the deaths and seeking information from the public.

Officials are asking people who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area on Monday evening or early Tuesday morning to call the Westford Police Department at 978-399-2345. Residents of Newport Drive, Endmoor Road, Lakeside Terrace, Pondview Circle, Birchwood Drive, or Grassy Lane are asked to check home surveillance footage for suspicious activity during that time.
