Just hours after being arrested on his way to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, Scottie Scheffler shot a five-under 66 in the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship on Friday, placing himself in a tie for third place when he entered the clubhouse.

Scheffler previously carded a four-under 67 on Thursday and entered the second round in 12th place, but by the time his second round ended, he was just two strokes behind leader Collin Morikawa and one shot behind Xander Schauffele in second place.

According to ESPN's Mark Schlabach, a police officer arrested Scheffler early Friday morning after he attempted to go around traffic caused by an accident that occurred outside Valhalla Golf Club by driving up on a median.

Here is video that I took of Scheffler being arrested: <a href="https://t.co/8UPZKvPCCf">https://t.co/8UPZKvPCCf</a> <a href="https://t.co/9Tbp2tyrJh">pic.twitter.com/9Tbp2tyrJh</a>

In an incident report, the arresting officer said Scheffler dragged him to the ground by accelerating his vehicle while the officer was trying to get him to stop. The officer said he suffered "pain, swelling and abrasions" to his wrist and knee.

Scheffler, who is facing charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic, was released from custody at 8:40 a.m. ET and made it back to the course for his 10:08 a.m. ET tee time.

ESPN's Jeff Darlington (h/t Schlabach) witnessed the arrest and said the officer "attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car." After Scheffler stopped, and rolled his window down, the officer grabbed Scheffler's arm. The officer then opened the door, pulled Scheffler out and handcuffed him.

The traffic situation outside Valhalla Golf Club was tumultuous due to a deadly accident that saw a PGA Championship worker get struck and killed by a shuttle bus.

Scheffler's attorney, Steven Romines, said Scheffler was entering where he had been instructed to enter the course and was not aware of the accident. Romines called it a "miscommunication" since the arresting officer was not part of the event-traffic detail.

Scheffler released the following statement regarding his arrest after being released from custody:

"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

"Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective."

Scheffler, who is the No. 1-ranked player in the world, was able to regroup and registered one of the best rounds of the day.

Scottie Scheffler almost just holed out again! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/PGAChamp?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#PGAChamp</a> <a href="https://t.co/ZdbByGW51H">pic.twitter.com/ZdbByGW51H</a>

He had a relatively clean scorecard with six birdies and just one bogey, and he birdied each of the three par fives on the course.

The 27-year-old from New Jersey already has one major title to his credit this year, as he won the Masters. That marked the second Masters win and second major championship of his career.

Scheffler tied for second in last year's PGA Championship, and following his performance in the second round, he is very much in the mix to contend for a win over the weekend.
