Mystik Dan's hopes of chasing a Triple Crown ended Saturday at a muddy Pimlico Race Course.

Seize the Grey went wire-to-wire to win the 149th Preakness Stakes.

The win marked the seventh Preakness victory for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who is now the oldest trainer to win a Triple Crown race.

The race marked the first time the Preakness was run on a muddy track since 1939, according to the NBC broadcast.

Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. tried to captain Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan to become the 38th horse to win the first two Triple Crown legs with a late push, but Seize the Grey held steady and proved strong down the back stretch.

Winning jockey Jaime Torres, 25, was competing in the first Preakness of his career.

Catching Freedom, trained by Brad Cox and ridden by 2021 Preakness winner Flavien Prat, finished behind Mystik Dan in a runner-up photo finish.

Most recently, Catching Freedom came in fourth during the May 4 Kentucky Derby, just behind the three-way photo finish that earned Mystik Dan the win.

Tuscan Gold entered the race with just three career starts, making the horse largely an unknown quantity entering the race. Trainer Chad Brown (Preakness winner, 2017 and 2022) and jockey Tyler Gaffalione (who won at Pimlico in 2019) led him to finish 8 1/4 lengths behind Seize the Grey.

Preakness favorite Muth, a Bob Baffert-trained contender considered a favorite to win, was scratched Wednesday due to a fever.

Baffert, who has won a record eight Preakness Stakes and claimed two Triple Crowns, still saddled Imagination, who fell behind down the stretch.

Mystik Dan's runner-up finish marks the sixth straight year in which the Kentucky Derby victor has not won the Preakness, which is the longest such stretch since 1997, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Justify, who won in 2018, will remain the most recent Triple Crown winner.
