TV tonight: Martin Freeman’s soul unravels in The Responder

The excellent scouse cop drama continues to unsettle. Plus: Rob and Rylan hit Florence, and it is wonderful to see. Here’s what to watch this evening

The Responder

9pm, BBC One

Another long, dark night shift of the soul with Martin Freeman’s unravelling scouse copper. Chris’s desire to get a CID day job has him squirming under the thumb of crime kingpin Franny (Adam Nagaitis), who tasks him with locating a sketchy person of interest. But before all that, Chris makes a house call to see his old man (the late Bernard Hill) in a scene that crackles with regret and resentment. Graeme Virtue

Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour

9pm, BBC Two

The unlikely friends continue their Italian culture odyssey, and this week they are seduced by Florence – the jewel of the Renaissance. They take in the Duomo di Firenze cathedral, the Uffizi and a plate of tripe. What is most wonderful to watch, though, is the growing understanding the pair have of each other. Hollie Richardson

Red Eye

9pm, ITV1

The end is in sight for the longest flight in history, as this aeroplane thriller reaches its turbulent penultimate episode. While Hana and Nolan make a crucial discovery in the air, back on the ground Hana’s journalist sister Jess is taken for questioning by M15. Then, the plane’s wifi cuts out … HR

The Piano

9pm, Channel 4

Big claims this week: Lang Lang calls an opera singer “the new Bach” as he, fellow judge Mika and not-at-all-impartial host Claudia Winkleman head to London’s Victoria Station in search of, well, the next Bach. Also tinkling the ivories: a romantic milkman and a soulful rugby player. HR

I Kissed a Girl

9pm, BBC Three

It’s the start of the second week in Dannii Minogue’s gay girls paradise. Newbies Thea and Hannah are causing quite the stir, Amy is making more than one head spin, there’s a “slut-dropping” workout, a double date and things get particularly steamy during the Behind Closed Doors chemistry test. There’s an episode every night this week. HR

Dopesick

10pm, BBC Two

“Let’s indict these assholes!” If the multiple plot threads and time jumps can make this drama about the US opioid crisis tricky to parse, some devastating performances give it emotional heft. As the final double bill opens, it looks as if Oxy pushers Purdue may finally face sanctions. But for victims such as struggling Betsy (Kaitlyn Dever), the damage is already done. GV

Film choice

The Secret of Kells, 11am, Film4

The Secret of Kells on Film4 Photograph: Everett Collection Inc/Alamy

The first animated feature by the exceptional Irish studio Cartoon Saloon, Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey’s 2009 kids’ adventure tells the tale of the ninth-century illuminated manuscript the Book of Kells. Brendan (Evan McGuire) is the inquisitive nephew of Kells Abbey’s abbot (Brendan Gleeson) – and while his uncle is fortifying the walls against a Viking attack, he sneaks into a mysterious forest nearby on a quest to help complete the biblical tome. Fantasy elements overlap with dark ages drama, told in bold, colourful images inspired by Celtic art and myth. Simon Wardell
