Teams eyeing Bronny James in the first round to secure LeBron James in free agency?

- by

Despite Bronny‘s statements, despite word from LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul and even James himself, the father and son remain inevitably linked, Bronny’s draft stock and LeBron James’ free agency tied as tightly as ever. Forget second-round evaluations, multiple NBA executives told The Times their teams have discussed drafting Bronny James in the first round in an effort to lure his father to their team in free agency. “If you’re a contender and you’re not having those conversations, it’s irresponsible,” said one executive, who like other NBA personnel spoke on condition of anonymity because teams don’t share their draft strategy.

LeBron James could become a free agent this summer and expressed in playing with his son, Bronny. Could the Sixers land the 20-time All-Star? Or is this the summer of 2018 all over again?

More on this storyline

Garnett also said that drafting LeBron James’ son could be worth it due to his genes alone. “If I am a team bro, I would actually take a chance on that,” Garnett said. “Because greatness runs through bro’s veins. You got to know at some point, he’s going to have a growth spurt and it’s going to click.” -via Bleacher Report / May 18, 2024
One of the questions he addressed involved a hypothetical one-on-one game with an NBA player. “If you could challenge any NBA player to a one-on-one, who would it be and why?” the reporter asked. “LeBron James, because I have not played him one-on-one in a minute,” Bronny replied. The reporter followed up by asking Bronny, “Who would win it?” “That I don’t know. … To be determined,” the younger James responded. -via TalkBasket / May 18, 2024
But in his first scrimmage, he fell flat. Bronny faded into the game, flashing some fire only when he allowed offensive rebounds or turned the ball over. Most disappointingly to some scouts, he didn’t look as if he played with a lot of effort. “He’s too timid,” one scout familiar with Bronny for years said before the combine. -via Los Angeles Times / May 19, 2024
Bronny, meanwhile showed some of the same traits we saw at USC: An inability to gain separation off the dribble or get into the paint, and a limited ability to leverage his straight-line speed and one-leg leaping ability in the run of play. James hit two 3-pointers in the second game and made two floaters in the first, but over the course of his two days, he shot 6 of 18 with four rebounds, two assists and four turnovers. He was 2 of 9 on 3-pointers and 3 of 5 from the free-throw line. -via New York Times / May 19, 2024
While he didn’t make spot-up shots at USC, the sense was that he’d shoot the ball fine with time because of his work ethic and mechanics. The first alarm at the combine went off when Bronny measured at just 6 feet 1 ½ inches in socks — “they don’t play in socks,” scouts like to say. “If he was 6 foot 5, we’d be talking about him in the first round,” one NBA executive told The Times. -via Los Angeles Times / May 19, 2024
