The 2024 Preakness Stakes featured a wire-to-wire winner. However, it was not betting favorite Mystik Dan, who was looking to follow up his impressive Kentucky Derby victory with another win in the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown schedule.

Instead, it was Seize the Grey who started strong and crossed the finish line first, winning the Preakness despite having only 9-1 odds to do so. The D. Wayne Lukas-trained colt had an impressive showing at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, where he paced the eight-horse field for the entirety of the event.

Mystik Dan ended up second, as the Kenny McPeek-trained colt made a strong push coming out of the final turn. But he couldn't overtake Seize the Grey, who finished emphatically.

Here's a recap of everything notable coming out of the 149th running of the Preakness.

    1. Seize the Grey: $1.2 million

    2. Mystik Dan: $400,000

    3. Catching Freedom: $220,000

The total purse for this year's Preakness was $2 million. So Seize the Grey earned his team 60 percent of that amount with his first-place performance.

It marked the seventh time that trainer D. Wayne Lukas has been victorious at the Preakness. However, the 88-year-old had not won the race since 2013, when Oxbow crossed the finish line first. Lukas also won with Charismatic (1999), Timber Country (1995), Tabasco Cat (1994), Tank's Prospect (1985) and Codex (1980).

Jaime Torres, the jockey who rode Seize the Grey to victory, had never even participated in a Triple Crown race before. The 25-year-old has only been riding for two years.

Starting from the No. 6 post on Saturday, Seize the Grey jumped out to a great start at Pimlico. He quickly pulled away the other seven horses before Imagination drew even as the field headed into the first turn.

Imagination soon dropped behind, though, as Seize the Grey was firmly in the lead going down the backstretch. From there, nothing changed up front.

Seize the Grey led the entire way, and although Mystik Dan and various others made late pushes, it wasn't nearly enough. It was an impressive showing by Seize the Grey, who recorded his second win of the month, having previously won the Pat Day Mile Stakes at Churchill Downs on May 4.

This was a much stronger performance against a more competitive field, headlined by Kentucky Derby champion Mystik Dan.

"I thought his action down the backside was beautiful, and I knew that he was handling the track," Lukas said, per Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press. "I said, 'Watch out, he's not going to quit.'"

With seven Preakness wins, Lukas is only one behind Bob Baffert, who notched his eighth victory in the illustrious race in 2023, when National Treasure stormed to victory.

"I'm only one behind him—I warned him already," Lukas said, per Whyno. "It never gets old at this level, and I love the competition. I love to get in here with the rest of them."

Seize the Grey is an experienced horse, having competed in nine races prior to the Preakness. However, he had only three previous wins. So it was a bit of a surprise to see him emerge victorious on such a big stage, especially in the manner in which he did so.

It was a dominant Preakness performance from an unlikely source, and that's what can make Triple Crown season so entertaining.
