The 2024 combine brought out over 60 players hoping to increase their draft stock and showcase their skills to NBA teams. Player comparisons have always been one common theme that young players are asked about, so HoopsHype asked 26 prospects at the event about NBA players they tried to emulate or looked up to growing up.
Take a look at some of the players they mentioned.
Ja'Kobe Walter
“I’d say Kawhi Leonard. He’s in the mid-range a lot and being a great scorer. Defensively, he’s always competing. I’ve always been watching him. He’s going to be my comparison.”
“He’s a great two-way player, and his mid-range game is strong. I like to emulate that, and defensively, he’s outstanding. I also watched Paul George for his handles and ability to score from anywhere. My favorite player is KD, but I was trying to emulate Kawhi and Paul George more.”
Rob Dillingham
“I don’t really model my game after anyone specifically. I’ve watched every point guard from Steve Nash to Kyrie Irving, Jason Kidd, all the guards.”
Donovan Clingan
“I enjoy watching Rudy Gobert, Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic, and all those traditional big men that are having an impact on the game and helping their team win.”
Stephon Castle
“Probably Jrue Holiday.”
Dalton Knecht
“I’d say I play a similar game to – not at his star level – Devin Booker. Throughout college, I think I played like him. I don’t know, just not as good as him.”
Kyle Filipowski
“There are players like Chris Paul, Luka, and LaMarcus Aldridge whom I admire for different aspects of their game. Chris Paul for his IQ, Luka Doncic for playing within himself and using his strengths, and LaMarcus Aldridge for his dominance and shooting ability.”
“I see bits and pieces of my game in players like Chris Paul and Anthony Davis. I learn from how they play and think ahead on the court, which helps me improve my own game.”
Yves Missi
“As of today, I’d say Dereck Lively. Someone who runs the floor, plays hard, and gets the job done.”
Tristan Da Silva
“Right now I would say Franz Wagner is a comparison because we’re both German, we play the same position, we are the same size, and have the same skillset.”
Kyshawn George
“It’s tough for me because there’s a part of me that I always played point guard for 16 years, and now I’m developing to be a wing or shooting guard. I would want to say Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, but I don’t play directly like him. I would want to say Klay Thompson right now because I’m a shooting guard and behind the three-point line a lot, but I think I have more ball-handling creativity than him, so I can’t really tell you. I think I’m a mix of a bunch of players.”
“I try to learn from various players. I study ballhandling like Doncic, shooting like Klay Thompson, and pace like Doncic. I pick up different elements from different players to improve my game.”
Bobi Klintman
“I watch Paul George a lot. Right now, I’m not there, but that’s the level I’m trying to get to. I watch his tape and try to learn from him. With my bag, I’m getting a lot of dribble moves from him too.”
Jaylon Tyson
“I’ve heard a lot of comparisons to Caleb Martin. That’s the biggest one that’s come up. I want to grow into that type of player. I’m not him right now. That’s the player I’ve been focusing and watching film on.”
DaRon Holmes
“I like guys like Naz Reid, Al Horford, Nikola Jokic and Aaron Gordon. I take different things from different guys. Defensively, Draymond Green because he’s not the biggest, fastest, or strongest, but he’s smart. He knows how to play in pick-and-roll coverage and uses his mouth to be vocal.”
Ryan Dunn
“There are a lot of players I watch like Paul George and Herb Jones too defensively. I think the closest I probably have is OG Anunoby right now with him in the playoffs with his size and strength defensively.”
Dillon Jones
“I think now when you see Josh Hart how he’s killing it, I think it’s harder to find a better comparison for me than him, especially from where I’m scaling up to be in the NBA. Josh Hart was a heck of a player at Villanova. He had the ball in his hands a lot, but once he came to the NBA, he found value in what he does. He’s a heck of a player in transition, rebounding the ball, being tough on the wings, and doing whatever coach Thibodeau needs him to do as that utility piece. I think it’s harder to find a guy I compare to than him.”
Hunter Sallis
“Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for sure. That has just how he’s able to get to his spot and get to his side, you know, whenever you want to. Like I kind of did a little bit of that early, but not to that extent.”
Trey Alexander
“I watch a lot of Dejounte Murray. Kind of those guys that play the two-way spot. They have the ball in their hands, but they also play with good guards. Obviously, he plays with Trae Young, he has to be able to be that second option, so that’s kinda a guy that I watch a lot of film on.”
Ajay Mitchell
“There are a lot of guys I look up to like Mike Conley, Jalen Brunson, Jamal Murray, Andrew Nembhard, and guys like that who can be high-level decision makers.”
Pelle Larsson
“I think any 3-and-D guard that’s pretty athletic and can defend well. I think a lot of people have brought up Christian Braun as a comparison maybe because we look alike or something. I’ve heard Jrue Holiday could be one maybe. He’s a guy I look up to.”
Adem Bona
“I’d say Clint Capela and Bam Adebayo. I think that’s going to be developing into Bam. I’d say those are the two players I can be compared to. Ben Wallace was a player I liked because of his energy.”
PJ Hall
“I loved Dirk Nowitzki growing up. In more recent years coming through college, I thought Frank Kaminsky was awesome. There’s a lot of guys that I thought I could emulate. And obviously a little stretch, I loved Kevin Durant, but I don’t play like Kevin Durant, though.”
Jalen Bridges
“I feel like it’s a mix of a few guys like Jaden McDaniels and Herb Jones. I’m trying to be humble, but I feel like I’m a better shooter than both of those guys, especially at this stage of my career. Trey Murphy and PJ Washington are guys I watch a lot of with my trainer who breaks down film and shows me comparisons with my film. I strive to be like them.”
Bronny James
“Guys like Davion Mitchell, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White who excel in their role, get good money and get good playing time from it because they’re locked into that role and know what they’re supposed to do.”
Reece Beekman
“I like guys like Derrick White. He’s pretty good. I think TJ McConnell for the Pacers, he’s a pesky guard who gets in the lane, makes plays on offense, and defense just picks it up full court. Just making it hard on the other teams’ guys. Just trying to learn different stuff from them so I can use this offseason.”
Coleman Hawkins
“Growing up, it was Aaron Gordon. Aaron Gordon’s a NorCal guy, and I’ve been following him since he was at Archbishop Mitty. I’d say Aaron Gordon, who kind of plays a little differently now because he’s doing what his team needs him to do. Also, Kevin Durant. Now, I see myself as a mixture of a bunch of players, depending on what the team needs. Probably like a Michael Porter Jr., a catch-and-shoot guy. Cam Johnson, if I’m playing small ball five. Maybe, although I don’t have the size, like a Lauri Markkanen, or I could facilitate like Draymond. So there are just a bunch of molds now. I like to watch Draymond a lot to see how he facilitates.”
Enrique Freeman
“I watched guys like Taj Gibson, and growing up I watched LeBron and KD. A lot of those guys, and Draymond Green too. I’ve watched Draymond a lot because he’s such an undersized big but able to be so effective with the ball. They’re all great players.”
Isaac Jones
“I like watching Larry Nance Jr, I learned a lot from him. Naz Reid I learn a lot from those guys.”
“Naz definitely shoots the ball better than me, but I like the way he handles the ball, that’s kinda like how I do it. He’s physical, he uses his body. Yeah, I can definitely see in my future having a role like him. I might not be as good as him because he’s really good, but he’s just someone I look up to now.”
