Fans of British author David Mitchell — and they are indeed legion — will be heartened to hear that his next novel, “The Bone Clocks,” will be coming out in the United States from Random House on Sept. 9. The author of “number9dream,” “Ghostwritten,” “Black Swan Green” and “The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet” reportedly dusts off some of the novelistic elements that made his most famous book, 2004’s “Cloud Atlas,” so mesmerizing — back and forward leaps in time and place and an eerily oddball future. According to a publisher’s statement, “The Bone Clocks” will follow a heroine named Holly Sykes, a runaway from her southwest England home in 1984 who is raising a granddaughter 60 years later in Ireland but has had various adventures in Switzerland, Iraq and a futuristic New York where vigilantes are in a supernatural war with a cult of “immortal soul stealers.”
