LOS ALTOS — An investigation continued Tuesday into a car crash that claimed the life of a 58-year-old Los Altos man.

The crash occurred Monday around 12:15 p.m. when a car traveling eastbound on Foothill Expressway left the roadway and collided with a tree, according to Los Altos police.

Police said the car had major front-end damage and was on fire when emergency responders arrived.

The driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene around 12:25 p.m., was identified as Matthew Maki, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

The collision is being investigated by the Los Altos Police Department Traffic Division and the joint-Palo Alto/Los Altos Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction, or STAR, team.
