Framed by sweeping rolling hills dotted by stately oaks, this casual Gold Country hotel in Plymouth is the perfect choice for those who crave modern comforts while visiting one of the cutest and quaintest regions in the state. While many inns in the Sierra foothills are big on Victorian ambiance, antiques and history, this friendly and simple hotel caters to travelers who long for blissfully cold AC, convenient parking, and a pool and hot tub, all of which make it easier to beat the heat when it’s blazing hot outside.

It’s a great place for families with children, who will appreciate the on-site barbecue, picnic area, spacious rooms and flower-fringed grounds. It’s also a laid-back home base for Amador County wine-tasting jaunts and family reunions.

Rooms: There are 47 spacious rooms with clean lines and comfortable furnishings that feel simple and uncluttered. The windows let you bask in the sweeping views of the countryside with its grazing goats, magnificent oak trees and the occasional mountain lion.

Zzzz’s: Plush pillow-top beds with fluffy comforters will keep you well rested, although you can hear some noise from nearby rooms. If you leave the windows open, you may also be awakened by the crooning of cows sauntering around the meadows.

Splashes: Bathrooms are roomy and clean, with a handy basket of toiletries for those who forget their toothbrush or razor.

Extras: There’s no restaurant here, but there is a basic continental breakfast that’s free and a family-friendly Mexican restaurant nearby.

Details: Rooms are $138-$186 (as of July, 2018), 17674 Village Drive, Plymouth; www.theshenandoahinn.com
