Travel Tip: Gold Rush redux

From Sept. 11-18, Placerville will host the 40th annual world gold-panning championships — yes, there is such a thing and it began in Finland — with a wide range of activities planned for visitors. The fun actually kicks off on Sept. 10 with a two-day Divide Gold Rush Days festival (www.dividegoldrushdays.com) in historic Georgetown, complete with a living history encampment, live music and family-friendly activities.

Coloma’s living history festival continues the fun September 15-17 at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, where you can pan for gold at the park and boo, hiss and cheer the melodrama skits at the Olde Coloma Theatre. Also that week: a grape stomp, a brewfest, museum and mine tours, and more. Plus, of course, the spectacle of competitive gold panning.
