Q Are there plans to improve the ramp from north Interstate 280 to Lawrence Expressway? Traffic backs up onto I-280 because of the light at Stevens Creek Boulevard.

Jerry Casellini

Santa Clara

A Sure are. The Apple spaceship-related project swings into a new phase in October when work on a new lane on the 280 north off-ramp at Lawrence is set to begin. This should last nine months.

Caltrans will add a right-turn lane onto Stevens Creek and the city of Santa Clara will adjust the Stevens Creek signal after work wraps up; Apple will chip in toward the project costs.

They’ll add a second left-turn-only lane from the north I-280 exit ramp onto Stevens Creek for a total of four lanes approaching Stevens Creek.

Q Do you have details about the changes being made on Calvert Drive, Lawrence Expressway, Stevens Creek Boulevard, Wolfe Road and I-280?

Sira Sudhindranath

A You ask and I do my best to deliver. Here are the plans:

  • The I-280 southbound off-ramp at Wolfe Road will be widened to two lanes back to the freeway.

  • The I-280 north off-ramp at Wolfe will be widened to two lanes and an additional lane will be added at Wolfe, resulting in a double left and double right turn.

  • A third northbound lane will be constructed on Wolfe north of the loop on-ramp to Pruneridge.

  • Calvert is down to one lane, but a second lane is coming as well as new signals at Stevens Creek/Calvert and Calvert/Lawrence.

Q Are there any mile marker signs left on Bay Area highways where we can check our speedometer distances? I used to see them all over, but haven’t found one.

    Martin Lee

A There are no longer any milepost markers on California highways. A few were installed on Kern County freeways about 10 years ago but they were recently removed. (They created confusion when it came to responding to roadway incidents.)

There are no plans to add milepost markers because the state has so many miles of freeways it would be very expensive to install and maintain them. But the state continues to place exit numbers at freeway interchanges; these numbers are based on mileposts and are probably about as close as we’re going to get to having a statewide mileage tracking system.

Q I live within walking distance of the Berryessa BART station (17th near Taylor streets) and I’m hoping there will be pedestrian access from that side. I would hate to have to walk to Berryessa and back south. Any idea if there will be access from Mabury Road?

    Chris Knight

    San Jose

A Put on your walking shoes. There will be pedestrian access off Mabury right before the station to allow pedestrians from the southwest to get to the platform. The addition of Berryessa Station Way running through the area provides more access for walkers, bicyclists and those in cars.

Q A new record: 55 minutes to go three miles from Scott/Central in Santa Clara to 101/880.

    Tom Scott

    Morgan Hill.

A Some records should never be broken.
