Colorado Avalanche prospect report: Brandon Saigeon had another huge weekend

Since four of the 13 prospects didn’t play this week, it was shaping up to be another uninteresting report. Thank goodness for Brandon Saigeon, honestly.

Ontario Hockey League

#17 - Brandon Saigeon (C)
Oshawa Generals (33-18-3)

So, uh, I think we all need to just give a round of applause to Saigeon for his performance this week. First of all, he played his former team (Hamilton) for the first time, and he definitely came to play in that one. He had a beautiful assist:

He then followed that up with the first goal of the shootout:

Then, Saigeon wrapped up his impressive weekend with a two-goal performance yesterday against Barrie:

Saigeon is seventh in OHL scoring, having finally hit the 80 point mark this season in 53 games played. Oshawa remains fourth in the East.

Western Hockey League

#21 - Nick Henry (RW)
Lethbridge Hurricanes (27-16-10)

Henry’s Hurricanes lost three times this past week (0-1-2), leaving them sitting third in the Central Division. Henry went pointless in the first two games before erupting for three assists in the final game. He currently sits 10th in WHL scoring with 72 points in 54 games.

NCAA

#16 - Cale Makar (D)
UMass Minutemen (21-6-0)

The Minutemen actually split their two games this weekend. They beat Boston University on Friday, but were shutout by their rival Lowell River Hawks the next day. Makar only had one assist in those two games, but by all accounts, it was pretty amazing:

UMass’ victory over BU was their 21st win this season:

With seven games left in their season, the Minutemen look poised to set a new wins record. They sit comfortably in first place in the conference.

#15 - Shane Bowers (C)
Boston University Terriers (10-12-3)

The Terriers only played once (losing to UMass), but Bowers scored the team’s second goal of the game:

BU has fallen to 7th in the Hockey East conference, and will wrap-up the Beanpot in the consolation game later tonight. Bowers has 18 points in 25 games this season.

#26 - Cam Morrison (LW)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (14-10-3)

The Irish were on a bye-week, which means you can just scroll past the next two players, too.

#4 - Nick Leivermann (D)

#2 - Nate Clurman (D)

Sigh.

#58 - Sampo Ranta (RW)
Minnesota Golden Gophers (11-14-4)

Good lord, it was a rough weekend for the Gophers. Penn State crushed them this past weekend, outscoring them 13-4. Ranta went pointless, and obviously things got out of hand:

Minnesota still sits 3rd in the Big Ten conference, but their back-to-back losses to a conference rival had to hurt.

#25 - Denis Smirnov (RW)
Penn State Nittany Lions (14-10-2)

On the flip side, it had to have been a pretty satisfying weekend for Smirnov’s team. Penn State was seventh in the conference last week. Their two wins over Minnesota saw them jump all the way up to fourth, which is huge. Smirnov had an assist and two shots on goal, and now has 15 points in 26 games.

#40 - Tyler Weiss (LW)
Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (8-16-2)

Weiss is finally starting to get going in the NCAA. Omaha split two games against Miami, and Weiss recorded assists in both games to give him six points on the season. Unfortunately, the team still sits 7th (second-last) in the NCHC.

Europe

#51 - Nikolai Kovalenko (RW)
KHL - Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (38-15-4)

Another team on a bye-week. Sigh.

#2 - Danila Zhuravlyov (D)
VHL - Bars Kazan (23-20-7)

Bars went 1-1-0 this past week, and Zhuravlyov put up two assists. Hopefully this is a sign of more points to come.

#19 - Gustav Olhaver (RW)
Allsvenskan (SWE) - Tingsryds AIF (16-21-7)

Tingsryds went 0-1-1 this week. Olhaver didn’t register any points.
