Friday open thread: Who is your favorite current Detroit Lions player?

I don’t think I’m breaking any news when I say that being a Detroit Lions fan is tough. There are plenty of things that makes this true, but I want to talk specifically about one today.

Because the team has so much roster turnover every year, and because—at least in the past—draft picks have been so inconsistent with their success, it’s hard to latch onto a single player as a favorite. Even the easy picks—Barry Sanders or Calvin Johnson—saw their Lions career end before it had to.

There’s a running joke that when I buy a Lions jersey, I curse that player, but the truth is, I’m far from the only one that has seen their jersey become obsolete. Lions history is littered with Charles Rogers, DeAndre Levys, Joey Harringtons and more.

But we’re in a new era of Lions football. Who’s to say whether it will be different than the past or not? But with a new era comes new faces. So today’s Question of the Day is:

Who is your favorite current Detroit Lions player?

My answer: I haven’t really given this a thought in a while, since I’ve sworn off buying new jerseys.

Typically to be my favorite player, you have to obviously be very talented at what you do, you have to have a fun or unique personality, and, ideally, you do something special off the field.

There are a handful of players that fit that profile, but right now I think it’s Quandre Diggs. I love a good underdog story, and Diggs plays so well despite being consistently underappreciated.

I think I really started to like Diggs after he talked following his contract extension last year. Just look at the things he said back then. It’s clear money isn’t the motivation on gameday.

“It’s a huge relief, but at the end of the day, you still got to put in work to show the Lions that you deserve every penny of it. My whole mindset hasn’t changed. I’m going to continue to go out and work.”

“I’m always going to have motivation, man,” Diggs told reporters. “I’m a sixth-round draft pick, so at the end of the day 32 teams passed me up, so I’m always going to have a chip on my shoulder. Ain’t gonna be nothing different.”

Diggs somehow remains an incredible hitter, despite rules outlawing almost everything. He does it while remaining humble. And he’s also hilarious.
