Creating a Best of Beauty Award-winning palette is far from the peak of Huda Kattan's innovative eye shadow power. Creamy powders in mesmerizing finishes and hues were just the beginning for Huda Beauty. The beloved brand recently released the Matte & Metal Melted Shadows, which are matching matte and shimmer liquid eye shadows packaged in a dual-ended tube. They're creamy, easy to blend, and even easier to use. But if you're like me and enjoy experimenting with eye makeup, these are incredibly fun to play with. No two people truly use the formula in the same way.

In December 2018, five hues dropped in classic Huda reds and pinks. Then, Huda Beauty quickly came out with five more in bolder options, like mint green and chartreuse, in early February. After talking to Kattan, I found out that even more colors and new, interesting finishes are on their way, and I honestly couldn't be more excited.

But that's not all we talked about. The Dubai-based beauty mogul also shared how a vacation helped inspired the two-in-one tube, a simple trick for applying the shadows, and what some of her unexpected favorite shades are. She revealed why she thinks they're the stronger version of traditional shadows, too.

Why liquid shadows?

Huda Kattan: "Originally, we thought we really wanted to make something foolproof and really easy to wear, which is why it's so easy to apply. That was the goal: give people something they could apply with no tools and no mirror and see what the possibilities are."

"[At first,] we were messing around with a primer formula and we thought: what if we added pigment inside the primer so that it's a really nice, creaseless eye shadow primer formula that you could wear if you were doing a normal smoky eye. We also really wanted something that could be Bikram yoga-proof. One of my team members has really oily lids, so we put her in Bikram yoga and had her test it, and it lasted all day long."

Why did you pair matte with metallic in one tube?

Kattan: "We really wanted to do something further than the metallic shadows that we saw, and we thought releasing a matte by itself wasn't enough. I was actually vacationing once and had very little room for products. I basically had taken one matte shadow [lab sample] and one metallic by coincidence, and I was able to create so many looks on the entire trip with those two shadows. I could do an all-over matte [look]; use it as bronzer; I could wear it to the pool because it’s waterproof. I came back from the trip being like, 'Oh my god, I need so many of these. I need this in a million colors. We need to put them together.'"

Wait, which one doubles as bronzer?

Kattan: "It's one that didn't end up launching, but we basically copied Sandalwood, which is a rusty brown shade in the Rose Gold Remastered Palette. We have a variation of it with Do Not Disturb/Room Service."

How did you pick the shades for the first and second drops?

Kattan: "We obviously love red and pinks, so that was really important that we have some of those — and definitely some good staple browns. We started messing around with other colors, like the teal and the yellow. We like to do a lot of warm smoky eyes, but we thought this was a good opportunity to push. We wanted something a little bit more bold, a bit more daring, and the colors are so much fun. This is a good time to get expressive with the colors, especially with the formula, you can do so much."

What are some of your favorite colors to use?

Kattan: "Minted & Dinero, which is that mint green, and Limelight, that neon yellow one — those are amazing. I'm not even into colors like that. What's getting me excited is a lot of times Huda Beauty is that brand that people get when they are just starting with makeup and I hope we can get them to start being more artistic and more experimental."

What's the easiest possible way to apply the shadows?

Kattan: "If you want to play it safe, I have a simple rule: Take a matte shade and apply three dots on your lid, blend it out, and then put a shimmer just on your lid."

And what's your favorite way to apply them?

Kattan: "For my eye shape, just because I like to lift my eyes, I always do a wing. It is kind of something we do in the Middle East, too. Even when we do eye shadow, we tend to shape out something that is a little more lifted. I like to use it directly from the tube with the applicator, and then, I like to pat it with a flat brush, like the Smoke & Smudge Brush. Instead of blending like a windshield wiper, it's almost like you're packing it onto the lid. It's something you'd do with a powder shadow, but it works really well with the matte formula as well."

What are some other unexpected ways you like to use the Melted Shadows, beyond bronzer?

Kattan: "We use them on lips. You can definitely do some cool designs, as well. I think for Coachella, they're going to be amazing. People are going to want to use the shimmers to dot around their faces or on their brows. For me, there's legit no limitations with this. The only limitation for me is maybe the quantity in the packaging. I mean, it's good for the eyes, but if you want to paint your body with it, that might be a limitation there."
