Samsung's Galaxy Fold Has A Screen Folding Problem

This article is more than 5 years old.

recently argued that you should forget about Samsung’s Galaxy S10 (details), Galaxy S10 Plus (details) and Galaxy S10e (details) due to significant teething problems and hardware omissions. Now that advice can be extended to Samsung’s radical (and jaw-droppingly expensive) Galaxy Fold…

Samsung

Picked up by the ever-vigilant SamMobile, a new hands-on video has exposed a deal-breaking problem with Samsung’s imminent screen-folding smartphone: a permanent crease runs down the middle of the display.

In fact, the crease is so pronounced (the panel is plastic) that it is visually distracting throughout the duration of the hands-on. It is also not helped by a heavily protruding rear camera (something Samsung had almost eliminated from its recent flagships) which makes the phone look slightly bent when used on a flat surface.

Furthermore, there is no reason to doubt the authenticity of this video (below). The phone is fully operational, stock is hitting the supply chain and it is identical to the device Samsung recently unveiled. Needless to say, however, Samsung’s official renders omit the ugly crease.

With Samsung charging almost $2,000 for the Galaxy Fold, I would expect this defect to be a deal-breaker for many buyers. It also venerates the design Huawei chose for its show-stealing Mate X (which results in a softer bend) and explains why Apple’s work on a folding iPhone is so heavily focused on using a malleable glass display.

All of which leaves Samsung fans with an obvious smartphone choice in 2019. With so many tangible upgrades over the Galaxy S10 range and without the first gen problems of the Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Note 10 looks like a no-brainer
