Amazon Video Announces New Films And TV Shows For April (2019)

This article is more than 5 years old.

Amazon has released details of all the new content it’s going to be adding to its Prime Video platform in April. And while it’s far from the longest list of new films and TV shows we’ve seen from the streaming giant, it does at least include a decent percentage of quality titles.

Looking first at Amazon’s own, home-grown new TV shows, the highlight is the second season of The Tick. Available in 4K and high dynamic range (HDR) from April 5, the show picks up where the popular first season left off in following the adventures of Tick and Arthur as they defend their city from a range of enemies.

Another old favorite returns on April 19, in the shape of season five of Bosch. Again available in 4K and HDR, the new season sees Bosch facing accusations that he planted evidence in an old case, while also trying to solve a case of murder in the Hollywood drugs scene.

The second season of Diablo Guardian (based on Xavier Velasco’s award-winning novel) debuts on April 12, exploring the difficulties faced by a young Mexican woman forced into the arms of a dangerous crime gang as she tries to make a new life in New York.

The final new Amazon Original show for April is Bug Diaries. Arriving on April 12, this is an animated series aimed at pre-schoolers, focusing on the adventures of an unlikely group of creepy crawly friends.

The biggest TV show arriving on the Amazon Prime platform in April by far, though, is the eighth and final season of Game Of Thrones. This will be available via HBO (in Amazon’s premium Channels section) from April 14. Note that this isn't available in the UK, as the HBO channel isn't supported there.

Turning to the films Amazon is adding as part of a standard Prime subscription, there are a number of stand out titles - many, strangely (given that its April not October), with a spooky theme.

The Shawshank Redemption (available from April 1) is probably the most universally acclaimed addition to Amazon’s film slate. But also well worth your time if you haven’t seen them already are Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, both Addams Family movies, and Neil Jordan’s surprisingly grim but, for me, criminally under-appreciated Interview With The Vampire.

There’s more vampiric fun to be had from April 1 with Blade (though you can skip the two much less successful sequels), while subtler scares are guaranteed on April 2 with 2018’s A Quiet Place

Finally on the film front, there’s a whole host of James Bond films coming your way on April 1, including fan favorites Gold Finger, Diamonds Are Forever, The Man With The Golden Gun, and Live And Let Die.

Wrapping April’s highlights up are a couple of big events on Amazon’s Live Sports channel: the NCAA National Championship on April 8, and the PGA Masters from April 12.
