Lions notes: Bob Quinn ranked as one of the worst GMs in the NFL

For the most part, Detroit Lions fans are relatively happy with the job general manager Bob Quinn has done managing the team’s roster over the past three years. Last time we polled the audience, Quinn had a 76 percent approval rate just before the start of free agency. That number has likely gone up even more (we’ll see tomorrow) after the acquisition of Trey Flowers, Jesse James and Justin Coleman in free agency.

Apparently, not everyone is impressed with the job Quinn has done. NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal ranked all of the NFL general managers, and the former Patriots personnel advisor came in at 21st. While that may not seem all that bad, that number is actually only out of 25, since Rosenthal did not count the seven GMs that have only been on the job since 2017.

“The offensive and defensive lines have potential, but overall, this is a roster that ranks roughly around average without much potential to be great,” Rosenthal states. “That’s where this Lions organization has lived for a while.”

While Rosenthal has a point that Quinn has struggled to find big playmakers in his three years on the job—and Quinn admitted as much this offseason—2019 could be a year in which the Lions GM puts those doubts to bed. He already added a few defensive playmakers in free agency, and this season is lining up to be breakout seasons for both Kenny Golladay and Kerryon Johnson.

It’s still somewhat early to say anything definitive about Quinn’s career in Detroit, but it does seem a bit insulting to put him below a guy like Dave Gettleman, who has lost all goodwill in New York just a year on the job there.
