BBC crime thriller Luther, starring Idris Elba, is set to get an Indian remake.
A title and details about which platform or network the show will bow on were not immediately provided on Tuesday. The remake will be developed and produced by Mumbai-based Applause Entertainment, which has created Indian versions of well-known BBC shows The Office and Criminal Justice. The latter just debuted on Disney’s Indian digital platform Hotstar, while The Office is also set to premiere on the service.
Luther stars Elba as detective John Luther investigating serious crimes while battling his own demons. The show, currently in its fifth season since it bowed on BBC One in 2010, has also been a major hit worldwide, having sold to over 230 territories. The Indian adaptation will be the second Asian version, after the award-winning South Korean remake, Less Than Evil.
“The original Luther has a tremendous international following, and we believe that an Indian version will work very well in our region,” said Applause Entertainment CEO Sameer Nair. Applause is part of the Aditya Birla conglomerate, which runs various businesses, from telecom to finance.
Added BBC Studios senior vp and general manager of South and South East Asia Myleeta Aga: “Applause is known for its focus on creating premium drama, and we believe that they will be able to do the format justice. We look forward to its success.”
BBC and Applause unveiled plans for the Indian remake of Luther on the opening day of the APOS conference in Bali, which runs April 23-25.
