The Colorado Avalanche select Matthew Stienburg with the 63rd overall pick

For the second time in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, the Colorado Avalanche have selected an NCAA bound player from the Maritimes. This time they chose Matthew Stienburg with the 63rd overall selection. This is the final pick the Avs received in the Matt Duchene deal.

This pick was a huge reach. Steienburg is a 6’1, right-shooting center who was ranked 133rd among North American skaters by NHL central scouting.

Committed to Cornell University next season, Stienburg was born in Nova Scotia but has spent the last two years at St. Andrew’s College in Toronto - the same prep school Alex Newhook played at.

Born in October, 200, Stienburg is one of the oldest players in the draft. He’s a big physical center that was able to put the puck in the net against 3rd tier competition last season. It will be interesting to see how he performs over the next few seasons in the NCAA.

This is a long term, swing for the fences type pick. That said, someone in the organization must love the kid because it’s very likely he would have still been on the board in a couple rounds.
