Male candidates are clearly at a disadvantaged situation when it comes to seeking admission in DU. Subjects such as Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and Geography (Honours) and Home Science are mostly available in women colleges. This leaves the boys with limited options of seeking admission in only a few co-ed colleges with lesser seats for them.
Moreover, these subjects are taught in very few co-education colleges.
"Traditionally, these have been preferred subjects picked by the girls. Till now, there has been less demand from the male applicants," said Shougaijm Somorendro Singh, deputy dean of Students Welfare Department.
Home Sciences is traditionally considered a female-oriented course. However, the dividing line is blurring. Boys are showing interest in this course as job opportunities are increasing in hospitality and nutrition management.
"We saw an increase in the number of male applicants seeking admission in these courses. DU will look into the increasing demand and increase the number of seats in co-education colleges of DU," says Singh.
