Toy Story 4 Tops Box Office With $100 Million-Plus Debut

Another weekend, another chance for Disney to cobble together buckets of cash. The latest hit to come from the factory: Pixar's Toy Story 4, which nabbed $118 million at the box office in North America this weekend. That number is slightly below expectations, which were in the neighborhood of $140 million, but still enough to give Pixar's corporate parent, Disney, all four of the top four domestic opening weekends of 2019.

Netflix Picks Up Superheroine Series from South Africa

Netflix has a new original series. The streaming service just picked up Mama K's Team 4, an animated series from South Africa's Triggerfish Animation. Created by writer Malenga Mulendema, the series focuses on four teenage girls who live in the Lusaka, Zambia, of the future and are tapped by a former secret agent to save the world. "In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way," Mulendema told Variety. "Most importantly, I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero."

Jill Soloway Is Taking Over the Red Sonja Movie

The adaptation of Marvel's Red Sonja comics has a new writer-director. Transparent creator Jill Soloway is taking over the project, which has been without a helmer since Bryan Singer was dropped as the film's director earlier this year. "I can't wait to bring Red Sonja's epic world to life,” Soloway said in an interview with Deadline. "Exploring this powerful mythology and evolving what it means to be a heroine is an artistic dream come true."

Netflix’s Dark Crystal Will Have Accompanying Comic

Get ready for nostalgia overload. Not only is Netflix releasing a new prequel to the 1982 fantasy classic The Dark Crystal, the series will have an accompanying comic book as well. Released by Boom! Studios, the 12-issue series will be written by Lumberjanes' Nicole Andelfinger and will dive into the time before the Age of Wonder when the Skeksis reigned over Thra. The prequel to Netflix's prequel is set to launch September 25, following the series premiere on August 30.
