Update: Boston Police shot and killed a 19-year-old man in Dorchester after he fired at them this afternoon, officials said.

Boston police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Dorchester. The shooting happened on Penhallow Street shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Asraf Ali, 48, was outside working on his car when he saw a man with a gun running up Silloway Street, with two police officers chasing him on foot.

They were yelling “Drop the gun! Drop the gun!’’ Ali said.

Alarmed, Ali quickly helped his grandfather inside. A few minutes later, he heard police again shout at the man to drop his gun before three shots rang out, he said.

“You don’t see this kind of thing around here, it’s crazy,’’ said Ali, who has lived in the neighborhood for about 30 years.

Mike Folan, who lives a few blocks from Penhallow Street, said the shooting “comes as no surprise,’’ saying there had been an increased activity among drug users and the homeless in the area in recent weeks.

“With all the activity in the last six weeks it’s not surprising that something came to this,’’ Folan said. “There’s been great cooperation between the neighborhood and the businesses and the police to crack down on this mess.’’

Police are scheduled to hold a news conference at 9 p.m.
