Welcome to Film Don’t Lie: The Definitive Video Breakdown of the Detroit Pistons.
This series identifies and documents every pivotal player and (overall) team theme and tendency that surfaced on the court throughout the 2018-19 season.
Instead of breaking the pieces into boring and predictable Offense, Defense, yadda, yawn, yadda pieces, they’re separated by opponent.
Since the Pistons finished 8th in the Eastern Conference last season, to tell their tale, I used film from their regular season games against the squads that finished 1-7: Milwaukee, Toronto, Philadelphia, Boston, Indiana, Brooklyn, and Orlando.
In each entry there will be three or four key takeaways that build into the bigger picture of the story of the Pistons in 2018-19.
For instance, the Pacers piece will touch on Detroit’s poor weak-side offense, Luke Kennard’s shooting shyness, and Thon Maker’s puppy-energy defense, among other topics, exclusively using examples from Pistons’ film against Indiana.
Read just one, though, and you’ll only be able to grasp one-seventh of the Pistons’ dilemma problems issues story. At that point, how could you go on with life without knowing the rest? Put the entire series together and now you’ve got a 20-piece McNugget loaded with player and team highs and lows.
In addition to the season themes, additional items include more on the team matchups, how the roster turnover might change things going forward and more.
But, most importantly to me, basketball terminology and teachable moments are sprinkled throughout and shared — think of it as my own personal bbq dipping sauce added to the McNugget mix.
I love this game, you probably at least like it, and I, selfishly, wish more internet time was spent discussing NBA basketball games instead of NBA basketball drama. Essentially, this is me fulfilling that “Be the change you want to see....” quote.
If you’re looking for Trade Machine receipts, I’ll save ya some time, this ain’t it. Please, for your own health, don’t read the Toronto entry, you’ll hate every word. I know you’ve already come this far, so on the bright side, if you bust a quick left on Cass Ave, r/detroitpistons shouldn’t be too much further. Tell ‘em DBB sent ya and trade away, my friend.
But, if you wanna talk hoops, good, let’s roll. I’ll drive.
