On a day when back injury sustained in Toronto forced Serena Williams to withdraw before her second-round match at the Western & Southern Open, Venus Williams upset defending champion Kiki Bertens to reach the third round.

Trying to control her shots and play smart, instead of going wild with power, unseeded Venus Williams won a thriller against fifth seed Kiki Bertens, prevailing in the third-set tiebreak after her Dutch opponent rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 5-2 in the decider, 6-3 6-3 7-6(4). Also in the second round, sixth seed Petra Kvitova fell to Maria Sakkari 6-4 2-6 6-3, as the Greek scored her sixth career Top 10 victory.

The rest of Tuesday’s schedule were all first-round matches. Seed No.13 Angelique Kerber was knocked out by Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit, 7-6(7) 6-2, and 15th-seeded Qiang Wang was upset by Hsieh Su-Wei, 6-3, 6-4. The 2013 Cincinnati champion Victoria Azarenka advanced when seed No.12 Belinda Bencic retired because of an injured left foot while trailing 6-4 1-0.

The only seeded player victorious on Tuesday was No.16 Madison Keys, as the American fought through a closely-contested match against two-time Grand Slam winner and 2017 Cincinnati champion Garbine Muguruza, 6-7(4) 7-6(5) 6-4.
