Yorkshire public sector procurement body YPO opens £400m framework for data centres, cloud hosting and security

But how much will go to AWS?

Public sector procurement body Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation (YPO) has opened its £400m framework for data centres, cloud hosting and data security.

YPO is owned by 13 local authorities in the north of England and supplies products and services to councils, schools, charities and emergency services.

In total, 29 suppliers have won a slot on the framework, including Amazon Web Services, CGI, Daisy Corporate Services, UKCloud and a number of smaller businesses.

Earlier this year, YPO's managing director, Simon Hill, confirmed the body's partnership with AWS.

He said: "Our recent customer survey showed that 80 per cent of our customers already use Amazon so this will give them an opportunity to complete their list of requirements through YPO, without fragmenting their spend and threatening the 'one-stop-shop' proposition."

Research from analyst firm TechMarketView found that AWS nearly doubled its footprint in the UK market last year, turning over £850m.

It noted the use of AWS in the public sector has been "growing rapidly" with customers including the Ministry of Justice, DVLA and the NHS.

In June it emerged HMRC splashed £11m with the cloud giant last year, more than six times the amount it received in corporation tax from the US firm. The Register exclusively revealed the taxman ended its service agreement with UK minnow DataCentred in October 2017.

The framework, which is divided into 12 lots, is now live and will run until 31 July 2023.

Dale Peters, analyst at TechMarketView, said: "This will be a key framework for many public sector organisations, especially those in local government and education where YPO is particularly strong, as they look to upgrade their infrastructure and accelerate their cloud ambitions."

YPO is holding a launch event at its HQ in Wakefield on 24 October. ®
