Gamescom starts this week, and the IGN crew is already off their excruciatingly long flights to Germany. While eating our ninth bag of airplane trailmix, we’ve been eagerly discussing what games we’re most excited to see at Gamescom. We also asked the IGN community what their most anticipated game is for the event, and more than 25,000 of you answered. Here are the results from least anticipated to most.
Don’t forget to check out our huge Gamescom schedule to know what’s coming and when.
6th Place - Ghost Recon: Breakpoint
Votes: 798/25158
Ghost Recon: Breakpoint brings the squad action franchise to a fictional island full of drones, shadowy mercenaries, and Jon Bernthal channeling every last bit of Punisher machismo. We played an alpha build of the game at E3 and loved every bit of it, and that wasn’t our only hands-on time. If you’re playing on PC, check out what exclusive features you’ll get.
5th Place - Pokemon Sword & Shield
Votes: 2168/25158
The biggest evolution of the core Pokemon formula only managed to get 5th place, but we’ll be sure to see some during Gamescom. Some Pokemon are also wielding special hidden abilities that can turn the tide of a battle. Click here if you want to see every single Pokemon (that we know of) coming to the Galar Region, and if that isn’t good enough, we also ranked the cutest Pokemon because, come on, look at them.
4th Place - Luigi’s Mansion 3
Votes: 2431/25158
Luigi’s third spooky outing was one major feature of Nintendo’s E3 presence, with the company building a creepy hotel for fans to demo the new game in. Fingers crossed for more news on the very creepy, sticky Gooigi. Nintendo finally announced that Luigi’s Mansion 3 is releasing (appropriately enough) on October 31, so we’ll probably get one last media blast since we’re in the tail end of August. Check out Nintendo’s Treehouse presentation for more gameplay footage.
3rd Place - Marvel’s Avengers
Votes: 3579/25158
We’re still not entirely sure what the final product will look like, and the E3 demo we got to see wasn’t the most amazing thing ever, but it’s about darn time that the box office-shattering franchise finally gets its video game adaptation. Thankfully, it’s got a killer cast of voice actors, including Nolan North, Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, and Travis Willingham, who played Thor in the animated adaptations. North said it was “one of the most stunning” things he’d ever seen.2nd Place - Death Stranding
Votes: 3667/25159
Hideo Kojima’s suitably weird tale of a cross-country deliveryman trying to avoid time-traveling shadow monsters, paramilitary weirdos, and Mads Mikkelsen is coming to Gamescom. Death Stranding most recently showed us a trailer showing off Heartman, the character played by film director (and Kojima’s buddy) Nicolas Winding Refn, who dies and gets resuscitated every 21 minutes. Kojima is expected to show up at Geoff Keighley’s Gamescom conference, so get hyped.
1st Place - Cyberpunk 2077
Votes: 12515/25159
Beating out every other choice by at least 8,400 votes, CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 has been the apple of our eye since we first saw that first E3 demo over a year ago. Cyberpunk Red, the latest version of the tabletop role-playing game, gave us great insight into the world of Cyberpunk just a few decades prior to 2077. Cyberpunk brought down the house at E3 when it announced that Keanu Reeves will star as Johnny Silverhands. Check out everything else we know about Cyberpunk 2077, including release date, character and gameplay details, and more.
IGN will be covering Gamescom during the whole event, which runs from August 20 to August 24. Joseph Knoop is a writer/producer for IGN, and he'll be dogsitting during Gamescom.
