Florida Soccer 3-0 Shutout Over Miami Gives Becky Burleigh Win 500

Florida's Becky Burleigh is the first female soccer coach in D1 history to reach 500 career wins.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 3-0 shutout over Miami Sunday gives University of Florida's head coach Becky Burleigh 500 career wins. She is the first woman in Division I soccer history to reach 500 wins.

To get the win Sunday, three different Gators scored in an 18-minute second-half span to reach the milestone win for their head coach.

Sunday's scoring:
After some close chances in the opening 45 minutes, Florida scored early in the second half. Parker Roberts headed the Sammie Betters' corner kick to sophomore Cassidy Lindley, located just above the 18-yard box. Lindley's right-footed strike scored in the far post upper slot in the 50th minute.

Vanessa Kara scored her third goal of the last two matches in the 62nd minute when she touched in the deep cross from Kit Loferski.

Sammie Betters' scored her first goal of the season in the 68th minute. Roberts' pass caught Betters making a run down the right side. Her 12-yard angled shot just beat the goalkeeper at the near post.

Worth Noting
  • Vanessa Kara scored her third goal of the last two matches tonight. She opened her Gator scoring career with the first two goals in Thursday's 4-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast.
  • Sophomore Cassidy Lindley scored her second goal of the season, with both coming from distance. In the season opener at Florida Atlantic, Lindley broke up a 1-all tie with her 35-yard strike in the 74th minute. Tonight, she started the Gator scoring with her 20-yard shot.
  • Senior Sammie Betters scored her fourth collegiate goal tonight and first since the opening weekend of the 2018 season.
  • This is the sixth solo shutout for Gator goalkeeper Susi Espinoza and her third for 2019.

What the Gators Said:
About tonight's performance:
"I think we started off a little slow in the first half but we came out in the second half with grit and more intensity. We found the back of the net. I'm proud of how we kept the ball and the way we moved it."– sophomore Cassidy Lindley

"Overall, we did a good job. Looking at the game, the first and the second half played out a lot differently in the sense of more intensity in the second half. We weren't playing poorly in the first half, just the pace of play was slower. As we came back from halftime, we were able to pick it up some and go at them more as a result." – senior Sammie Betters

"I liked their response in the second half. In the first half, thought we played at a tempo that was too slow to break them down. They [Miami] were really disciplined in a low-block defense. We talked at halftime about how we need to dictate and to find ways to break the block they had at midfield. Once we did that, it opened up a lot of things for us." – Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh

You've had three goals in last two matches. How does that feel?
Definitely (it feels) really good. It shows that our attacking unit is working better together. It is great to get that rolling just before conference play begins." – senior transfer Vanessa Kara

On her milestone win:
"It shows you've been around a long time. Not to minimize all the contributions that players, staff, support staff have made in creating a program here that's achieved at a high level for a long period." – Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh

On Becky Burleigh's 500th win:
"She is kind of the rock, I would say. She is someone you can always go to when you need something – she's always going to be there for you. She does a really good job of getting the most out of people. Whether that is her acknowledging that they are giving a 100 percent and keeping them giving 100 percent or her saying 'No, you can give more' and helping them find a way to give more. She is someone you can lean on." – senior Sammie Betters

How much does that mean to you to score in Becky Burleigh's 500th win?
"I'm really happy about that because I came here because of Becky – because of who I thought she was as a person and a coach. To be a part of her history here is really incredible." – senior Vanessa Kara
