The Retro Hair Flip Trend Is Everywhere

Nothing defines an era quite like hair — gravity-defying bangs for the ’80s, dramatic side parts in the early aughts—but few looks are more iconic than the ’60s flip hairstyle. You know the look: Think Jackie O's hair, full and voluminous at the roots that flips out at the ends.

Every couple of years the retro style comes back into modern hair lexicon as hairstylists look to the past for inspo. "The Rachel" in the ’90s was another famous, edgier riff on the style, while an inward flip has a more polished, Old Hollywood feel. But over the past month or so, there's been a steady stream of celebrities wearing the trend with a more up-to-date twist: While the length of their hair is smooth and straight, the ends are dramatically flipped in either direction.

Most celebs have been pairing a flip with a half-up, but the look has also been interpreted in bobs, high ponies, or red-carpet-appropriate updos. Both Kim Kardashian West and Jennifer Lopez in particular have really embraced the style in a variety of ways. For example, Kardashian West wore her hair in a flipped bob for her Skims campaign, and J.Lo wore a flipped pony on the Versace runway in that dress.

Celebrity hairstylist Justine Marjan describes the style as "a reiteration of the ’90s version of a ’60s-era hairstyle," which explains how it manages to feel both classic and of the moment (’90s hair trends are back in a big way, in case you haven't heard). She also loves the look because "it feels cute and sexy at the same time."

The style is also pretty easy to pull off and works for most hair types. To get the look above, Marjan started by gathering the model's hair half up by applying Oribe Rock Hard Gel to the roots, and brushing it into a ponytail at the top of her head with a smoothing brush. Then she added the bottom half of the hair into the ponytail. (Working in two sections ensures you won't have any bumps, she says.) Finally, to get the flip, Marjan sprayed the pony with a hairspray (she likes this one by Tresemmé), and used the GHD Soft Curl Iron to flip out the ends (about two inches of hair), working section by section. Her tip: Don't try to flip the whole pony at once, or it's more likely to fall straight.
