Week 6 Song of the Game: ‘Karma Police’ by Radiohead

Still less than 48 hours removed from the event, and the outcome of Monday’s game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers is inescapable this side of social media. Twitter flames continue to be stoked with the echoing battle cries of “DETROIT VS. EVERYBODY.” Dan Orlovsky is on ESPN calling for a total upheaval of what we currently call officiating. The NFL admitted the second illegal hands to the face penalty “wasn’t there.”

But nothing will change the fact that the officials overstepped their bounds, made an egregious call that cost the Lions an opportunity to win the football game, and everyone is left hand wringing until Detroit takes field against the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday—then it’s an opportunity to repeat the cycle all over again... unless someone has something to say about it...

As previously mentioned, Lions Twitter is still running hot over this whole catastrophe that went down at Lambeau on Monday night. From Monday evening to Tuesday night, my screen displayed #DetroitVsEverybody each and every time I opened up Twitter. And it wasn’t just fans who took to social media to air their grievances. Even the good likes of folks like Dan Miller, the Lions play-by-play announcer, got it out of their system:

And while I’d like to hear Thom Yorke’s strained vocals as an omen to the crew who officiated Monday night, after seeing Packers offensive tackle David Bakhtiari talk about how he lobbied for those calls against Trey Flowers, it’s so much more fitting for the speaker to be him.

As Lions fans, aren’t we all a little delusional at this point? To think the Lions could go into Lambeau on Monday night and knock off the NFC North-leading Packers? We’ve played this record before. The grooves are deep and the vinyl crackles. Someday we’re gonna wear a starry crown, but, c’mon, not like this.

I want to say the Lions gave it all they could, but I’d be lying considering I listened to the fourth quarter. They had chances and opportunities to win, come away with more than 50-plus-yard field goals to put this one away, but they didn’t. The cops came for them after they swore they were a different team in the first quarter. The flea-flicker, the deep-passing attack, the creative plays, all they wanted was credit for getting off to a good start!

Congratulations, here’s your 2-2-1 record and place at the bottom of the NFC North—and a week to beg the Karma Police to be on your payroll in Week 7.
