Emma Thompson may have been appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire last year, but that doesn't mean she's following royal beauty protocol. This week alone, the Oscar-winning actor and screenwriter got not one but two majorly whimsical hair makeovers, and both will make you seriously consider some not-so-serious looks for the holiday season.

It all started on Monday night, when Thompson and her fellow Last Christmas cast members attended the new movie's UK premiere. She wore a stunning violet coat with matching pants — but the pants weren't the only matching element. The surface of Thompson's slicked-down, short, blonde hair was covered in glittery purple stars. At first glance, you might think they're barrettes, but the stars were actually stenciled on by her longtime stylist, Lewis Pallett, who indicated on Instagram that he used products by Got2b and Disco Dust London.

"As a hairstylist having a client who completely trusts and believes in you is such an amazing thing, Dame Emma Thompson and I have been together for nearly 5 years and she never questions me and last night on the red carpet for her new movie @lastchristmasthemovie she wore purple glitter stars in her hair and rocked it to the moon and back," Pallett wrote on Instagram. "Thank you for trusting me!! I love this look and I hope everyone else agrees she looks incredible!"

But just when we thought Thompson was done with unexpected hairstyles, she showed up to a holiday-lights ceremony at London's Covent Garden with her blonde hair dyed pink. This time, it wasn't slicked down, but the underlayers were still a dark brown shade, creating an incredibly cool contrast.

Although Pallett didn't give the exact details behind the making of the look, he shared that he did use something by Live, which makes permanent, semipermanent, and temporary pink hair-color products. But we'll just have to wait until her next public appearance — and see if her hair is still pink — to find out which it was.
