TigerVNC is an open source and multi-platform project that provides users with a client and server implementation of the VNC (Virtual Network Computing) remote desktop connection protocol. It supports Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

The program is based on the 4th generation of VNC, offering a high-performance and advanced VNC implementation that includes top-notch features, as well as support for the latest X.Org X11 server.

Some of its features are borrowed from various other projects, including the well known TightVNC and TurboVNC applications. These includes accelerated JPEG compression, and support for running video and 3D programs.

While the server part of the project runs entirely in background, as a daemon, the VNC viewer component provides users with a graphical user interface (GUI), from where they can easily connect to remote machines and interact with graphical apps.

The user interface is very familiar, especially to those of you who are used with VNC viewer applications. It is a small window that allows users configure the project, as well as to load and save TigerVNC configurations.

To connect to a remote machine, just type in the IP address and hit the Connect button. If a connection is not successful, the application will pop-up a “Connection timeout” warning message and it will close.

Form the Options dialog, you will be able to choose the preferred encoding, color level, specify a custom compression level, enable JPEG compression, choose an encryption and authentication method, as well as to set up screen and input settings.

The application is available for download as binary packages for both 64-bit and 32-bit hardware platforms, as well as source archive that enables users to configure, compile and install the program on any operating system.

TigerVNC is a good VNC viewer application that uses the RFB protocol specification, which is much better than the one used by the commercial RealVNC software. The server part of the project is also important, because it is integrated into a single package.

What's new in TigerVNC 1.10.0:

  • The clipboard now supports full Unicode in the native viewer, WinVNC and Xvnc/libvnc.so
  • The native client will now respect the system trust store when verifying server certificates
  • Improved compatibility with VMware's VNC server
  • Improved compatibility with some input methods on macOS
