Colorado Avalanche prospect report: Three point weeks for Denis Smirnov and Alex Beaucage

Well, honestly, it was a pretty quiet week for our Colorado Avalanche prospects, especially for those in the CHL. However, players in the NCAA and Europe did step up! A lot of prospects had multi-point weeks, which is always fun to see. Enjoy this week’s installment.

Canadian Hockey League

WHL

#44 - Bowen Byram (D)
Vancouver Giants (11-9-2)

Byram’s Giants played twice this week, but he failed to record any points. Of course, he was busy putting up points at the Canada-Russia series last week, which was good. Vancouver sits second in their division and Byram still has 14 points in 20 games this season.

#34 - Sasha Mutala (RW)
Tri-City Americans (11-7-1)

Just the one assist for Mutala this week (who didn’t represent Team WHL at the Canada-Russia series). Tri-City sits third in their division and Mutala has 22 points in 18 games this season.

#27 - Luka Burzan (C)
Brandon Wheat Kings (10-13-0)

In two games this week, Burzan only had one assist, but he did play with Byram for the WHL at the Canada-Russia series. Brandon has climbed up to second in the wildcard race, and Burzan has 21 points in 23 games this season.

QMJHL

#16 - Alex Beaucage (RW)
Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (11-9-3)

Rouyn is slipping a little bit, having fallen to fourth in the conference. After representing Team QMJHL at the Canada-Russia series, Beaucage returned to Rouyn and put up a goal and two assists in three games.

Beaucage has 28 points in 23 games this season.

HOCKEY EAST

#18 - Alex Newhook (C)
Boston College Eagles (7-4-0)

It was another high-scoring weekend for Newhook and the Eagles. Boston College swept both games against Vermont and Newhook had a goal and an assist.

#4 - Drew Helleson (D)
Boston College Eagles (7-4-0)

Helleson also tallied an assist in the first game against Vermont. Boston College will lay two Ivy League schools next week — their first against Yale on Tuesday, followed by Harvard over the weekend.

BIG TEN

#26 - Cam Morrison (LW)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8-1-1)

Well, Notre Dame finally suffered their first regulation loss of the season (and it was a shutout loss, to boot). While they did manage to win the second game in overtime, unfortunately, Morrison went pointless.

#4 - Nick Leivermann (D)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8-1-1)

Leivermann registered one assist on this goal:

#2 - Nate Clurman (D)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8-1-1)

But it was Clurman who had the biggest week for the Irish (shocking, I know!). He had two assists in the second game:

And was named the player of that game!

Notre Dame will take on Michigan State next weekend in two games.

#58 - Sampo Ranta (RW)
Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-6-2)

Despite dropping both games to Penn State over the weekend, Ranta had a stellar showing, scoring twice:

Minnesota will play the offensively dangerous Wisconsin Badgers twice next weekend.

#25 - Denis Smirnov (RW)
Penn State Nittany Lions (9-2-0)

It was quite the thrashing of Minnesota by Penn State over the weekend. Smirnov tallied one goal (an empty-netter) and two assists:

#40 - Tyler Weiss (LW)
Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (6-3-1)

Another multi-point weekend for Weiss as the Mavericks split their two games against Western Michigan. Weiss had two assists.

Omaha will play two games against Miami next weekend.

ECAC

#20 - Matthew Stienburg (RW)
Cornell Big Red (6-0-0)

Stienburg may have gone pointless over the weekend, but Cornell is rolling and are undefeated to start the season. They’ll play two games next weekend, against Quinnipiac and Princeton — can they keep their undefeated streak alive?

KHL

#51 - Nikolai Kovalenko (RW)
Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (15-13-0)

Lokomotiv has really started to turn their season around (remember when they fired their head coach?). They won twice last week, and Kovalenko had a goal and an assist:

#2 - Danila Zhuravlyov (D)
Ak Bars Kazan (21-5-1)

Bars still sits atop the conference and Zhuravlyov has returned to Russia after a stint with the U20 team. They only played one game, but Zhuravlyov tallied an assist!
