Monday open thread: Would you rather have the Chiefs offense or 49ers defense?

The Super Bowl will feature two elite units - which would you rather have on the Detroit Lions?

The Super Bowl matchup has been decided, and the Kansas City Chiefs will battle the San Francisco 49ers for the NFL’s championship. Both teams won in dominant fashion on Sunday, with the Chiefs defeating the Titans 35-24 and the 49ers shutting down the Packers in a 37-20 victory.

The 49ers have gotten here on the back of their stout defense, a unit that was able to shut out the Packers in the entire first half. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is a head coaching candidate for what he has done to this defense. A 4-12 team in 2018, San Francisco transformed into one of the league’s best. From rookie Nick Bosa’s 12 sacks to veteran Richard Sherman’s shutdown coverage, the 49ers have plenty of talent from top to bottom.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, have relied on their explosive offense, and it took center stage against Tennessee. Patrick Mahomes was fantastic on Sunday, further entrenching himself among the top quarterbacks in the league. He boasts a very talented supporting cast as well, with Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill being two of the best at their respective positions. Their run game has not found the groove it once had with Kareem Hunt, but their aerial attack is deadly enough to make up for it.

The Detroit Lions are on a completely different level. Sadly, that level is among the disasters of the NFL.

Because the draft is still months away, and the Lions are nowhere near the playoffs, let’s get hypothetical.

Today’s Question of the Day is:

Would you rather have the Chiefs offense or the 49ers defense on the Detroit Lions?

My answer: For the sake of simplicity, we will assume that all relevant players and coaches transfer as well. I would rather have the 49ers defense.

I am a defender of the Lions offense in 2019. It floundered at the end, but Matthew Stafford is as vital to the offense as Patrick Mahomes is to theirs. You could even argue more so, given Matt Moore’s performance in Mahomes’ stead versus David Blough’s. With a healthy lineup, the Lions offense could be decent.

Their defense, however, is far from decent. Essentially every player on the 49ers’ defense would be an upgrade over Detroit’s. You could make an argument of Darius Slay versus Sherman, but as a whole, a Saleh-led defense would push Detroit into one of the league’s best teams. The Lions had multiple issues closing out games, but with such a stout defense, that would not have been the case.

Now, if only we could actually trade for that defense...

Your turn.
