This free, AI-powered Lightroom plug-in will automatically tag your photos with keywords

Imagga's API actually can provide confidence score and we are thinking of ways to offer to set preferred threshold or/and a number of keywords returned.

Computation is remote and only thumbnail size of your picture is transmitted and immediately deleted after processing. In case you checked to help us improve the technology, the thumbnail will be securely saved until our next tech update. I hope this helps...

Automatic?? Not by a long shot. Interesting how the use of certain words creates something thats not really there, AI? Automatic etc etc. Its not automatic because it only suggests 30 keywords but you have to take the time to look at the suggestion and make sure its right, thats not automatic. Its like telling someone you can guess the day of a month if you're given 30 tries. The keyword system with the discontinued and ages Apple Aperture has been and still has the best keyword system of any DAM.

So skip the whole key word search thing and move straight to object recognition searching.

I see no need for keywords if software like this is nearly there. Just cut out the middle man and write an independent search tool for your photo library that can then organized, group by clicking a top tab, and open in whatever editor or viewer you want, after clicking a few.

What do you think happens when you launch a google search request, bots rushing all over the internet looking into every single website for what you're looking for?

Not the internet, just your photo library. Open a browser, say you want an image from your computer with a mountain, a cat and a flower. The software did an image recognition search last night and prioritize your photos, so now in seconds you get top five.
Bonus points for a developer if you can train it locally with 5 to 10 images of a person to be Bill or Sally. Then type in sally, lake, flower and get a series of best hits.
Why would you need to waste time indexing.

Some of my keywords software AI will never assign or identify: "my favorites", "Smith Family", "Baptism", ..
- What about scanned and/or old photos which have no meta data so no time or no location stamp?
- And AI will never 100% distinguish between birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, ...
If we can't be confident that a search will result in 100%, then it's of no use. Manual keyword assignment for me.

I haven't tried this plug-in (and probably won't) but are you using the correct version of LR? If your running Windows as a standard user, you may also need to run LR as an Admin possibly. That or uninstall and re-install. That's all I can think of unless your user profile in Windows is some how damaged.

It looks like you still have to select the images one at a time. If this plug-in could go through your LR library and tag everything that it thinks is similar, that could be a time saver.

My thought as well. I have no doubt that this is a goal for them. Can't imagine that it will be too difficult in terms of adding that extra programming.

This is a very nice idea. And one I'll definitely get, once all the installation bugs are ironed out. It's one of those things where you don't really care about false positives or false negatives re the keywords. You already know that, if you are really interested in having complete keywords for an image, you need to go to each individual image (in one of the examples from the video, you'd certainly want to add "bend" "horseshoe" "horseshoe bend" "arizona" etc, to the general keywords the program recognized). And incorrect (extra) keywords are no big deal. If I search for "Grand Canyon" and some images from Grand Cayman come up in that search, it's a simple matter to deselect them before proceeding further in my workflow.

The last image was keyworded, Sea and Lake. The bridge had Sea and River.
Not particularly accurate in assigning keywords.
Now there are plugins to cull your images, keyword your images, automatically "fix" your images. I guess the best thing to do is put your camera on "automatic" and let Adobe (and their supporters) tell you that - really dude, you suck, we can't find a good photograph in your entire input stream.

I'm sure there's a use especially for stock photographers or those who are selling their photos online, but how many people really tag their photos with keywords? I used to, but have since then stopped and rather give photos useful filenames that describe the overall shoot.

For us less organized/disciplined folk, it's quite useful every now and then. I have a fair number of my images stored in Google Photos for instance, and there are times when I might just want to search "dog","black cat", "mountain" or whatever to help dig up some old photo.

@dom33, you just type it in the search when on their website. Their algorithm automatically recognizes and associates common object. For instance, looking for pictures of your cat? Just search "cat".

I don't know if google, etc... actually automatically "tag" the images in metadata., however.

@akluiber, yes thanks. I thought you meant keywords. Yes, Google algorithms finds "cats" and "mountains". The problem I have is that Google Photos does not search for tags or actual keywords. So, for example, if you have a pictured tagged with "cat", it won't find that picture (unless it recognizes actual cat in picture).

Is it actually automatic? Looks like you still need “a single click”… for every individual photo. Versus doing a keyword search on e.g. “beach”, selecting all found photos, and tagging them with that keyword (which again is only useful if you want to export with keywords since all images are automatically searchable in Lightroom from the beginning)

Hi @madeinlisboa: I won't stop anyone from using AI-powered software or devices (like home assistants) or posting on social media where AI uses that data to market your preferences to 3rd parties. We are in a democracy, so what one does with their data is their thing. But I've read 1984, I grew up in East Germany with the Stasi spying on my family and I have friends in China who have to deal with internet censoring, VPNs, social credit systems and so forth. Orwell couldn't have dreamt up the possibilities that are out there now to watch and control every single one of us. And I have zero trust in even the most democratic government or for-profit entity to use that data only to my advantage. Yes, I'm a smartphone owner and I'm obviously using this DP Review forum, but the less data about me I send out to the cloud, the better. It's just like drinking: moderation is key. So I always look at what data I really need to send out there and for me that doesn't include private photos.

You have actually have more to worry from US companies (Five Eyes FFS) such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon in terms of face recognition tech.

@DuxX yes true, but even then so, many companies include the blurb about collecting information for statistical purposes that does not identify the user or computer--this is just boiler plate text to allow them to collect data. Some companies respect this, but others don't and it's not just specific to inside or outside of the US.

That being said, one shouldn't be afraid of such things necessarily because if someone really wanted your info or data, they would find alternative (and probably more effective) ways to get it

Because you cannot store this data in the RAW file and thus need a database or DAM to do so. For JPEGs, DNGs and other files formats you can usually embed this data in the file after the fact but not for RAWs.

The reason they probably chose Adobe is because its the most widely used system among photographers.

PhotoSupreme v5 (idimager.com) recently introduced a simillar feautre using Google Vision. You need to obtaint a Google API then the application uploads a low-res image and Google AI sends back a list of keywords. You can then pick which one to assign. Some keyword recommendations are annoyingly common such as head, arm, leg etc., others can be useful. Over time you can build up a better keywording practice if you wish, but that can be achieved with resilience as well.
It can also recognize landmarks, objects and detect face areas (not face detection!) and OCR text in photos.
My take is that if you already had a solid keywording practice it won’t help you that much but if you didn't it won’t make you a better keyword savy either.
Some use cases are if you are out on a e.g. dog show and you want to label the breeds properly with common and scientific names. You need to have a good knowledge of the breeds but AI can help list choices so you can pick the proper ones.

As far as I know, people do not send their out of camera RAWs to stock photo companies, but rather in a form such as JPEG, TIFF, etc, that can support embedding keywords.

Contrary to popular belief, it is in fact possible to embed XMP metadata in most RAW file formats. Most DAMs and image editing applications choose not to embed metadata in RAW files and create sidecars instead. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
