Colorado Avalanche prospect report: Alex Newhook finding his offense in the NCAA

It was a pretty quiet week for Colorado Avalanche prospects, quite honestly. Hopefully things pick back up next week.

Canadian Hockey League

WHL

#44 - Bowen Byram (D)
Vancouver Giants (19-19-4)

Byram returned to WHL action last week, playing three games and registering one assist. The Giants remained first in the conference wildcard race, and Byram has 20 points in 30 games this season.

#34 - Sasha Mutala (RW)
Tri-City Americans (14-23-5)

In three games since the last prospect report, Mutala added another goal and assist. That brings him to 48 points in 41 games this season, as Tri City remains third in the wildcard race.

#27 - Luka Burzan (C)
Brandon Wheat Kings (24-17-3)

It was a two goal week for Burzan in three games, as he finally eclipsed the points-per-game mark (barely). Burzan has 45 points in 44 games as Brandon sits third in the division.

QMJHL

#16 - Alex Beaucage (RW)
Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (21-19-4)

Beaucage registered just one assist in two games this week, but he still has an impressive 52 points in 44 games this season. Rouyn still sits fourth in the Western Conference.

#18 - Alex Newhook (C)
Boston College Eagles (15-5-0)

Newhook scored one goal in the Eagles’ two games against UMass Lowell and Boston University:

#4 - Drew Helleson (D)
Boston College Eagles (15-5-0)

Helleson added one assist last week. Boston College will host Maine for two games this weekend.

BIG TEN

#26 - Cam Morrison (LW)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-10-4)

Notre Dame went 0-1-1 against Ohio State over the weekend. Morrison went pointless, but he still has 18 points in 24 games this season.

#4 - Nick Leivermann (D)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-10-4)

Leivermann also didn’t record any points. He has 10 points (seven assists) in 22 games this season.

#2 - Nate Clurman (D)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-10-4)

Also going pointless, Clurman, who is still looking for his first career NCAA goal, has six assists in 24 games this season. Notre Dame will host Wisconsin for two games this weekend.

#58 - Sampo Ranta (RW)
Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-10-4)

Ranta’s Gophers only played once this week, an exhibition game against the US National Team’s U-18 squad. Ranta recorded one assist in the game and is now up to 11 points in 20 games on a struggling Minnesota team.

#25 - Denis Smirnov (RW)
Penn State Nittany Lions (16-7-1)

Penn State went winless this weekend, going 0-1-1 against Michigan. Smirnov went pointless, but he still has 17 points in 23 games this season. Penn State will take on Michigan State this weekend.

#40 - Tyler Weiss (LW)
Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (9-10-5)

Omaha is on a road trip through Colorado right now — they tied twice against Denver last weekend and will play Colorado College twice this weekend. Weiss recorded one assist and is now up to 16 points in 23 games this season.

ECAC

#20 - Matthew Stienburg (RW)
Cornell Big Red (13-1-3)

Stienburg recorded one assist in two games against Northern Michigan. He’s now up to four points in 15 games this season. Cornell will host Dartmouth and Harvard this weekend.

Europe

KHL

#51 - Nikolai Kovalenko (RW)
Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (26-18-4)

No games played anyone in the KHL this week, as they’re off for the league’s all star break. Kovalenko has 19 points in 43 games this season.

#2 - Danila Zhuravlyov (D)
Ak Bars Kazan (32-11-4)

That also goes for Zhuravlyov. He has eight points (seven of which are assists) in 34 games this season.
