“Hamilton,” the Broadway mega-hit musical that became one of the Bay Area’s biggest theatrical blockbusters, has closed, another casualty of the coronavirus crisis.
The musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda was set to run at the Orpheum Theatre through May 31. It had been in the midst of a second San Francisco run that had been characterized by sold-out shows and long waits on ticket websites. But with fears of COVID-19’s spreading and home-sheltering requirements shuttering live performances venues for the foreseeable future, presenter BroadwaySF has elected to terminate the Orpheum Theatre stand.
The Tony Award-winning musical uses hip-hop and a mostly non-white cast to tell the story of Alexander Hamilton and America’s founding fathers.
The closure follows a number of previous announcements of canceled “Hamilton” performances, as well as cancellations of other BroadwaySF shows. The company brings touring versions of Broadway hits, and other events, to two San Francisco theaters.
Customers who purchased tickets through BroadwaySF will be automatically refunded through the original method of purchase.
Those who purchased tickets through another source (such as Vivid Seats, Goldstar or TodayTix) should contact that source for refunds.
Due to the current California stay-at-home mandate & shelter-in-place order in San Francisco, all remaining performances of @HamiltonMusical have been canceled at the Orpheum Theatre. #HamiltonSF was scheduled to play through May 31, 2020. #AndPeggyTour pic.twitter.com/1z0bpUKXEJ
