Here’s a roundup of what we’ve been reading this week

This week we’re switching things up and focusing on moments in the news that caught our eye, kept us informed, lightened the mood, and made us laugh.

Useful reading: This basic virus explainer from Stanford Medicine. This guide to advocating for yourself at the ER on Zora. This welcome distraction on Vulture. This face mask guide for people without symptoms who aren’t at immediate risk of exposure.

Donation opportunities: The WHO Solidarity Fund is a great place to give if you’re unsure where to distribute your resources. If you’re in a position where you don’t need your stimulus check, #ShareMyCheck is a movement to promote redistribution of checks to people and organizations who need it most. Donate to your local senior citizen support network, homeless shelter, or domestic violence organization.

Retail therapy with a conscience: Avocado mattress is pivoting its cutting and sewing department towards making masks. Care of Chan launched Save Restaurants, a collection of merch that supports some struggling NYC restaurants. If you’re looking to support independent bookstores from a distance, Bookshop is a newish online hub for local bookstores. ( I just bought stay-at-home icon Samantha Irby’s new book and it’s going to be a welcome distraction.)

And in closing, I have watched this video a bazillion times and will watch it a bazillion more. Stay safe!
