Authorities arrested a Saugus High School substitute teacher suspected of having a sexual relationship with a female student, officials said Thursday, May 28.

David Cornish, 28, was taken into custody Wednesday at his residence in the Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials said in a news release. He was held in lieu of $100,000 bail, and booked on suspicion of lewd acts with a minor and oral copulation with a minor.

Investigators believe he had been involved in a sexual relationship with his student between April and May. Further details were not immediately released.

Cornish was immediately suspended from his position after the accusations against him came to light, said Dave Caldwell, a spokesman for the William S. Hart School District, said in a statement. The allegations against him will be reported to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

“The district strives to provide a safe educational environment for all of our students,” Caldwell said.
