Re: “County extends comment period for proposed oil drilling in Brentwood” (Eastbaytimes.com, May 22):

I am horrified that Contra Costa County is trying to rubber-stamp new fossil fuel exploration without an environmental impact report.

Science shows that we need to transition off of fossil fuels as quickly as possible to prevent a climate catastrophe. We cannot afford to use up what we have already discovered. Exploring for more is suicidal.

California already produces far more oil than it uses. This state is helping to drive the climate crisis by exporting oil all around the Pacific Rim.

As we shift to green energy locally, do we want to make hypocrites of ourselves by continuing to act as the world’s gas station?

With its handling of the proposed Brentwood drilling, our county is showing deferential treatment toward a dangerous industry that should be regarded with the utmost distrust. As residents and voters, we need to demand better.
