New Coronavirus Cases In The Northeast Remain Mostly Flat: Here’s Why

TOPLINE

As the U.S. experiences an enormous surge in new coronavirus cases, the rate of infection in the Northeast U.S. remains mostly flat, with the exception of Maine (where cases are increasing) and New Hampshire (where cases are falling), according to New York Times data.

KEY FACTS

New coronavirus case diagnoses remain mostly constant in Vermont, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island—and outside of the Northeast, cases in Indiana, Virginia, Nebraska, South Dakota and Maryland remain similarly flat.

This comes as cases in 38 states—in the Southeast, Southwest and Midwest—rise on a daily basis.

New Hampshire is the only state in the nation in which cases are decreasing—no new hospitalizations have been reported for three days in a row, though 32 people remain hospitalized, according to WMUR 9.

Maine is the only state in the Northeast with cases on the rise; a majority of the state’s cases are among people under 50, reports the Bangor Daily News.

As of last week, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont were on the path to containing the disease, according to Covid Act Now, which uses real-time data to model Covid-19’s spread, as reported by NBC New York

The Northeastern states instituted some of the nation’s longest, strictest and earliest economic closures, with states like Rhode Island and Massachusetts mandating out-of-state travelers quarantine for 14 days before navigating the public sphere.

Chief Critic

New York and New Jersey—the states still leading the United States’ Covid-19 case count—are no longer on track to contain the disease, though the infection rate is spreading slowly and meets international standards after largely successful periods of shutdown, per Covid Act Now data, which measures new cases among communities as they are reported.

Tangent

With coronavirus spiking in states around the country, Florida and California say they will issue citations and fines to people who do not comply with mask wearing policies.

Key Background

National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease Director Dr. Anthony Fauci issued a grim warning on Tuesday: that he would “not be surprised” if the U.S. would start to see 100,000 new cases a day, a significant rise from the current number of around 52,000 new daily cases. “What we thought to be unimaginable is the reality we’re facing right now,” said Fauci in the Tuesday Senate testimony.
