Just in case we didn’t get the memo that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry want very little to do with the royal family, they just reminded us again. They formally closed down their charity SussexRoyal, filing the relevant paperwork with the authorities in the UK, People has confirmed.
Instead, Meghan and Harry will focus on their brand-new foundation, Archewell, which was of course named after their son, Archie. “Our focus is on supporting efforts to tackle the global COVID-19 pandemic, but faced with this information coming to light, we felt compelled to share the story of how this came to be,” they revealed in a statement.
According to The Telegraph, the foundation will be a charitable nonprofit with volunteering services, a “wide-ranging website,” podcasts, and potentially films and books. But they’re not in any rush to launch. “They want to get it right, that’s really important to them,” a source told Vanity Fair. “This is something that they want to do for the rest of their lives so they’re not going to be pressured into launching something that’s still in the relatively early stages of development.” In the meantime, they’re focusing on other causes like the Black Lives Matter movement and the #FeedHOPE initiative.
In January, Meghan and Harry announced their move to North America and their official split from the royal family. “This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity,” they wrote. Well, it looks like they’re sticking to their initial plan.
