Cam Newton apparently isn't wasting time taking on a leadership role with the New England Patriots.

Mike Reiss of ESPN reported Newton was the one who "initiated" a workout with second-year receiver N'Keal Harry last week. Footage of the two working out made rounds on social media last week, along with Odell Beckham Jr. and rapper Blueface.

The NFLPA advised players to stop holding workouts last month, citing concerns over COVID-19. The union is also in negotiations regarding player safety, and unsanctioned workouts without masks could hurt the NFLPA in talks with the league.

Newton signed a one-year contract with the Patriots last month, and he's expected to compete with Jarrett Stidham for their starting job.

The videographer who filmed the workout told Boston.com's Gary Dzen that Harry and Newton worked out for around two hours.

Harry is heading into his second NFL season and will be looking to improve on a forgettable, injury-plagued rookie season. He finished with just 12 receptions for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

It's expected that Harry will also be competing for a starting job in 2020.
