SAN JOSE – Crews on Monday battled back-to-back brush fires in San Jose, one of which spurred the closure of Highway 101.
The first blaze was reported about 3:05 p.m. near Component Drive and Orchard Parkway, said San Jose Fire Department spokesperson Erica Ray. Crews contained the 5-acre fire by 4:10 p.m.
Less than three miles away, a second blaze ignited near Old Bayshore Highway and North 13th Street about 3:20 p.m., Ray said. The fire was under control as of 4:10 p.m.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to structures in either of the fires.
As a result of the second fire, the California Highway Patrol closed all lanes of Highway 101 just north of East Julian Street about 3:45 p.m., according to dispatch logs.
Two northbound lanes and two southbound lanes were reopened by 3:55 p.m., and all southbound lanes were reopened by 4:10 p.m. As of 4:30 p.m., the freeway was fully reopened.
