Harvard’s Jack Drury Signs Pro Contract in Sweden

With the Ivy League’s decision to cancel all sports until January 1st at the earliest, a number of hockey players at those schools are now reconsidering some of their options for next season.

One such player is Harvard’s Jack Drury. The Vaxjo Lakers of the Swedish Elite League announced on Friday that Drury will join their team next season.

Drury was a second round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2018 NHL Draft. He had a respectable season with the Crimson in 2018-2019, scoring 24 points in 32 games. But his sophomore campaign last season was a real breakout. He scored 20-19-39 in 28 games. Those numbers ranked fourth nationally in points per game and second nationally in goals per game. He was a key component on Harvard’s power play, which was among the most efficient in recent college hockey history.

With Drury set to return for his junior season at Harvard, along with the multitude of young talent Harvard had last year, the Crimson looked poised to be one of college hockey’s top teams next season. But like so much of life, Covid-19 has thrown a major wrench into those plans. In addition to Drury opting to play overseas, Harvard also lost junior defenseman Jack Rathbone to the Vancouver Canucks after the Ivy League postponement, and could potentially lose some of their top recruits to other schools.
